How to Play With Friends: Servers Explained

 Once Human throws you into a strange post apocalyptic world, and it’s your job to figure out how to survive, but you don’t need to do it alone. Whether it’s building a base or fighting grotesque monstrosities, some things are just more fun to do with a buddy. But in order to do that you need to be in the same world, on the same server. So how do you do that, and if you already have characters, how do you change servers?

How to Join a Once Human Server

The first time you are confronted with the server question will be when you boot up Once Human for the first time. It’s the first option on the menu, and if you click on it, you can see a list of the available servers.

Select any one from the list, and confirm.

If the server has a particularly high population you may get a popup recommending other servers, which can save you from long wait times, but you can still choose whichever server you prefer.

Once you’ve chosen a server, select “enter game” on the main page to get started. You should make note of which server you're in, and make sure any friends you intend to play with choose the same server.

Once Human Worlds

Servers are divided into smaller subsections called worlds. They are functionally the same, it mostly just serves to divide the population into smaller chunks so that you aren’t running into other players and whatever structures they make too often.

Just note that you will need to be in the same world on the same server as your friends to play together.

How to Switch Worlds

You can easily switch worlds if you need to. Just visit any Teleportation tower, and select the “Switch to another world” option. This will bring up a list of worlds.

Pick the one you plan to meet up in, and presto, a shared world.

Any structures you built will still be in whichever world you built them in, so you may want to consider dismantling it all first and rebuilding here, but that’s up to you.

How to Switch Servers

Moving from one world to another is easy, but what if you need to change servers entirely? You can, sort of.

Anytime you are at the start menu you can select a different server, even if you already have a character. If your person is in Server 1, and your friend is in server 23, you can select that server and jump in.

The caveat, however, is that your character isn’t coming with you. Characters can not change servers, so if you want to play with a friend who’s not on the same server as you, one of you will need to start from scratch. That’s why we strongly recommend sharing which server everyone is planning to enter before starting.
